It is common for all breeds of cattle to develop the black version, and
Maine's are no exception. This is accomplished by cross-breeding
with Angus and other black varieties to develop color. The result is
a dilution of the original strain. We have combated this problem by
staying pure to the breed, providing high quality breeding
stock. Our animals are the traditional red and white color and
are carefully culled annually to keep only the best producers with
excellent EPD's, superior udders, ease of calving, natural maternal
instincts, and of course highest calf gain. Our number one desire is
to have gentle, calm animals for ease of working, and our herd
qualifies!
Hybrid Vigor, the crossing of two breeds of animals, is known to
provide superior performance. This is only effectively accomplished
by crossing purer strains of particular breeds, something that can be
difficult with the mass crossbreeding that normally happens. We
offer a limited number of replacement heifers each year for those
operations interested in taking advantage of the Maine-Anjou's famous
growth characteristics. It is a well known fact that it is the
Maine-cross Club Calves that win the awards at most competitions.
Annually, our steers are sent to Nebraska to a Maine-Anjou Steer
Feeding Trial. Our animals compete with Maine crossbreeds and consistently
bring home awards in carcass value and gain. The carcasses are
graded and the information gained is used to further our breeding
program. We have been able to link genetics with carcass
value, marbling and grading and are striving to establish a high
percentage of choice animals for market.
The last Feeding Trial in 2008, we came home with a handful of
awards. We were honored with:
- First place in the "Top Individual National Steer
for Average Daily Gain" with a gain of 4.031 lb/day!
- First place in the "Individual National Steer for
Carcass Gain"
- First place in "Top Group of Five National Steers
for Average Daily Gain"
- Second place in "Group of Five National Steers for
Carcass Gain"
- Sixth place in "Groups of Three Junior Heifers for
Combined Carcass Gain and Carcass Premium"
At this present time, Fall 2009, we have a selection of
